Do membrane structures insulate? Shade and enclosure performance

Membrane structures can provide shade or building enclosure, but shade is not insulation. Open carports and enclosed venues have different thermal aims. A single membrane should not generally be claimed to insulate like a brick wall.
Open carports mainly involve shade and ventilation
A carport changes direct sun and rain exposure, but temperature beneath also depends on sun direction, ground surfaces, vehicle heat and airflow. Compare shade during actual use rather than choosing solely by colour or an insulating-membrane label.
Assess enclosed spaces as complete envelope systems
Stable indoor temperatures require coordinated roof layers, airtightness, openings, thermal bridges, ventilation and conditioning. Cushions, multiple membranes and insulation assemblies need specific design. One material parameter cannot establish whole-building energy use or savings.
Explain thermal needs in the enquiry
State whether the space is enclosed, its region, hours of use, occupants or equipment, and temperature targets. Ask suppliers to define parameter subjects and test conditions, distinguishing light transmission, solar performance and heat transfer.
