Before repairing flaking paint, blisters or rust on grandstand steelwork, determine whether the cause is local damage, inadequate preparation, exposure or the coating system. Widespread early cracking should not simply be called normal.
Identify the existing protection system
Check the original protective treatment, coatings and corrosion extent, including joints, welds and water-trapping areas. If corrosion affects sections or connections, seek professional assessment rather than covering it with paint.
Control preparation and application conditions together
Follow design and coating documents for rust removal, cleaning, compatible coating layers and recoating intervals. Control environment, surface dryness and coating thickness. Thicker is not automatically more durable, and incompatible products should not be mixed.
Protect membranes and retain repair records
Protect membranes, seats and nearby facilities during grinding, spraying and other work to prevent damage from debris, paint or solvents. Record repair locations, materials, conditions and checks to identify recurring problems.
