Choosing PVC Membrane Fabric for a Tensile Membrane Structure Carport: Five Things to Confirm with the Supplier Before You Order

For most carport projects, the standard configuration of a tensile membrane structure is PVC membrane fabric — an economical, practical choice that meets the needs of the majority of vehicle parking canopies. This is our standard supply configuration. As a buyer, before placing a purchase order (RFQ, i.e. Request for Quotation) you should confirm five things: what the standard configuration includes, whether an upgraded membrane is needed, how the fire-retardant rating will be determined, who provides the warranty, and how warranty terms are written into the contract.

Standard PVC Configuration and Fabric Warranty

The standard PVC membrane is sourced from a specialist membrane fabric manufacturer, whose warranty on the fabric itself is 5 years. It is important to distinguish the parties: the 5-year warranty is provided by the fabric manufacturer for the membrane material only — it is not a warranty from the fabricator or installer for the entire structure. When requesting quotations, ask the supplier to state in the proposal the membrane source and the responsible warranty party, so that responsibility is clear if repair or replacement is needed later.

When to Upgrade to PVDF or PTFE

PVC meets everyday carport use. If your project has higher requirements for surface self-cleaning or service life — for example, in dusty environments or where you want to reduce cleaning frequency — PVDF-coated or PTFE membrane can be considered. These are upgrade options: cost and suitability must be assessed against the specific project, and not every carport needs them.

When B1 Fire-Retardant Membrane Applies

Standard PVC membrane generally does not meet the B1 fire-retardant rating. If the carport includes EV charging stations, or the project is in a location with fire-safety requirements, a B1-rated fire-retardant membrane is recommended. The required fire rating should follow the applicable local fire regulations and be confirmed at the design stage — settle this item before signing the contract.

Writing Warranty Terms into the Contract

Warranties should not rest on verbal promises. Membrane fabric, steel structure and other components should be listed as separate warranty items, each with its warranty period and responsible party, all written into the contract. Before signing, check each warranty clause against what was discussed earlier.

Pre-Purchase Confirmation Checklist

  • Intended use: standard vehicle parking, parking with EV charging, or a fire-safety-regulated location — this determines the membrane grade
  • Membrane material: standard PVC or an upgrade to PVDF/PTFE; specify the type and source in the quotation
  • Fire rating: whether B1 fire-retardant membrane is required, confirmed at design stage per local fire requirements
  • Warranty: 5-year fabric manufacturer warranty plus separate warranty items for steel and other components — all stated in the contract
  • Service boundaries: how far design, custom fabrication and installation are each contracted, agreed in advance
