What is a membrane structure? Materials, forces and selection

A membrane structure uses a membrane and supporting system together to cover or enclose space. Understand it through material composition, supports and intended use, rather than promotional descriptions such as a new generation of architecture.
Membranes and supports are not independent decoration
Membranes, cables, members, edges and foundations jointly influence structural behaviour. Coordinate form with materials and analysis rather than covering an arbitrary shape with any fabric. Systems differ in their calculation, connection and operating requirements.
Do not summarise material performance with universal percentages
Light transmission, solar behaviour, fire performance and weathering depend on the product and test conditions. Avoid universal reflectance, lifespan or permanent self-cleaning claims, and do not substitute raw-material characteristics for whole-project performance.
Use the relevant technical basis for the project
The published contents of the Chinese Technical Specification for Membrane Structures cover materials, initial form analysis, load effects, cutting, connections, fabrication, installation, acceptance and maintenance. The old claim that China has no relevant technical guidance is inappropriate. Professionals should confirm applicable documents and editions in project records.
