Grandstand membrane pretension cannot be assigned as one value based on area, and more is not necessarily better. Design must consider membrane geometry, material properties, support and cable boundary conditions, and service loads together.

What pretension does in a membrane structure

Flexible membranes rely on suitable pretension and curvature to work as intended. Pretension affects deformation, support reactions and drainage, so material selection, form finding and structural analysis must be coordinated rather than drawing any curve and tightening it afterwards.

Design values and site controls are different concepts

Design targets must be translated into tensioning measures that can be implemented and recorded. Boundary details, adjustment devices and site conditions influence those measures. Designers and installers should define the relationship; another project's adjustment travel is not a substitute.

When to seek a further inspection

Record new slackness, persistent wrinkles, ponding or connection movement with photographs and circumstances, and contact professionals. Do not replace inspection with local bolt tightening or infer actual tension from the sound of tapping the membrane.
